SALIS

Salis is a multimedia series exploring the patterns resulting from human intervention in the natural environment.

As a species, we dominate our planet. We have conquered most of the world and turned most of our habitable land into an arable and economically viable source of resources to provide to our ever-growing population.

As we grow, both in numbers, but also more conscious of the consequences and impact of our exploits of the natural environment, perspectives began to shift. We started acknowledging that at the current pace and with the current methods, our approach is far beyond un-sustainable. Rather, if preserved, it will truly be a means to our end.

On the bright side, technology has brought amazing advancements, allowed for improvements in efficiency, and therefore allowed us to begin creating more from less. As we begin to (slowly) shift towards a more positive and environmentally conscious era, the photographs and video capturing our human patterns will one day become an homage to our old ways. An homage to the ways and methods which we learned, practiced, improved, and ultimately (and hopefully) also abandoned as their fundamental nature was too flawed to sustain.

In its current form, the content is a visual metaphor. Just like a poisoned apple, these images are beautiful to the eye, but when the realities behind them are understood, our appreciation and perspective change. We need to reconsider our activities, reconsider our actions, and take a step towards a more sustainable future globally.

This project is a skeptical celebration of the future history of human activity and kept as a reminder of a past to which we shall not return.
